Before we get started, Croatia is currently in an experimental phase of implementing the “STEM Revolution”. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines -science, technology, engineering and mathematics — which integrates the four subjects into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. The project has currently raised about 100.000$ and it’s growing on a daily basis.
Now, to get to the point of the article, MAKERbuino. It is a open source game console which can be built by anyone to fit their needs. Other than being a cool retro-shaped device, it is an educational device with which you can have fun throughout three phases — getting it, building it, using it.
MAKERbuino was created by Albert Gajšek, an 18-year-old student from Karlovac, Croatia with support from his brother. It all began somewhere around three years ago. In just a couple of days, his Kickstarter campaign managed to gather 10.000$, which was also his primary goal. A couple of days later, it went up to 20.000$ and today, it has about 100.000$ successfully pledged.
Huge support from my side since, come on, it is 2017, it is finally time to change the way our education system works. MAKERbuino is a clear example of how four subjects can be learned from one fun project. A project with which you can have hours of fun even after finishing it, and that’s what actually matters.
